Hi and happy new year! I hope you all enjoyed the festive period and are now feeling ready to start 2020 on a positive healthy vibe!
To help get you started this yummy breakfast idea is great for cold winter mornings and has the added benefit of supporting your gut health!
👇🏻here is the recipe:-
🍏 grate one apple leaving the skin on
🍏 place the grated apple in a saucepan with 100g of frozen mixed berries
🍏put on a low heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes until the fruits are stewed
🍏 add a tablespoon of chia seeds for the last 5 minutes for extra omega 3, fibre, iron and calcium
🍏you can make this up the night before and simply warm it up in the morning
🍏 great with (coconut) kefir, homemade gluten free granola or gf porridge oats with almond butter!
👇🏻the health benefits of stewed apples include:-
✅ pectin is released from apples as they are cooked and may help to repair the lining of your gut
✅ pectin is a prebiotic – it helps to feed the friendly bacteria in your gut, whilst also helping to reduce harmful bacteria
✅ pectin can also help to lower cholesterol and improve blood sugar management
✅ the fibre may also help to reduce constipation
❌ however if you find that apples cause bloating, this could be due to a bacterial imbalance in your gut which would need to be addressed before re-introducing foods such as apples which are high in FODMAPs (a group of carbs which can cause bloating, gas and stomach pains in sensitive individuals)
