Benefits of pectin

Hi and happy new year! I hope you all enjoyed the festive period and are now feeling ready to start 2020 on a positive healthy vibe!
To help get you started this yummy breakfast idea is great for cold winter mornings and has the added benefit of supporting your gut health!
πŸ‘‡πŸ»here is the recipe:-
🍏 grate one apple leaving the skin on
🍏 place the grated apple in a saucepan with 100g of frozen mixed berries
🍏put on a low heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes until the fruits are stewed
🍏 add a tablespoon of chia seeds for the last 5 minutes for extra omega 3, fibre, iron and calcium
🍏you can make this up the night before and simply warm it up in the morning
🍏 great with (coconut) kefir, homemade gluten free granola or gf porridge oats with almond butter!
πŸ‘‡πŸ»the health benefits of stewed apples include:-
βœ… pectin is released from apples as they are cooked and may help to repair the lining of your gut
βœ… pectin is a prebiotic – it helps to feed the friendly bacteria in your gut, whilst also helping to reduce harmful bacteria
βœ… pectin can also help to lower cholesterol and improve blood sugar management
βœ… the fibre may also help to reduce constipation
❌ however if you find that apples cause bloating, this could be due to a bacterial imbalance in your gut which would need to be addressed before re-introducing foods such as apples which are high in FODMAPs (a group of carbs which can cause bloating, gas and stomach pains in sensitive individuals)
